Subaru to record
Subaru of America in August recorded its best sales month since 1987, the company said Wednesday.
Subaru recorded a sales total of 15,348 units for the month, up 9 percent over the same period last year. Year-to-date totals of 100,826 units are up 9 percent over 1998 year-to-date totals of 92,895 units.
The Legacy model line led sales with 8,504 units posted. The Outback recorded its best-ever sales month with 6,434 units, a 21 percent increase over August 1998 Outback sales. Forester posted sales of 4,448 units, an increase of 12 percent over the same month last year. Impreza also posted a record month at 2,396 units -- its best sales month in two years.
Camry fuels Toyota
to best-ever August
August sales pushed Toyota to its fifth consecutive month of record-setting sales in the United States.
The best-ever August sales of 134,504 vehicles was an increase of 2.8 percent over last August. Year-to-date sales total 981,734, an increase of 93,094 units, or 10.5 percent, compared to the same period last year.
Camry led the sales charge with August sales of 42,624, an increase of 5.1 percent. Year-to-date Camry sales are 15.2 percent ahead of last year's record sales pace. The Corolla compact sedan posted healthy sales of 24,013 units, an increase of 1.8 percent over the same period last year.
The Lexus Division's record-setting August was led by the RX 300 SUV, which recorded its all-time best-ever sales month with 6,754 units sold, an increase of 23.8 percent over the same period last year. The LS 400 luxury sedan also chipped in with 2,302 sales, up 10.7 percent over last year.
Mitsubishi posts
record-setting month
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America had its best sales month so far in 1999, as well as its best-ever August, with sales of 25,928, up 43 percent over the prior year, the company announced Wednesday.
Year-to-date sales for Mitsubishi are up 22 percent over the prior year, a total of 159,379 units
Montero Sport sales were up 101 percent for August; with 5,094 units sold, this is the best sales month ever for the mid-size sport utility vehicle. Galant sales reached 7,896 units, a 91 percent increase for the mid-size sedan over August 1998. Eclipse coupe and Spyder convertible sales totaled 6,280, a 12 percent increase; the company continues an orderly "sell-down" of 1999 model inventory in preparation for the advertising launch of the all-new 2000 model, which begins next week.
