Latest population figures released by the Kansas Board of Agriculture showed that Lawrence still rated as the sixth largest city in the state while Douglas County stood No. 12 among the counties. The state population was listed at 2,115,441. Wichita, Kansas City, Topeka, Salina and Hutchinson were ahead of Lawrence. Lawrence's permanent population was listed at 24,492 but "permanent" student totals pushed it well beyond 30,000. The state census did not include student totals. The city had been gaining about 600 permanent residents per year for recent times. The Douglas County population was listed at 35,029, a gain of 585 over the total of the previous year.
Lawrence city school enrollment radched a record high of 5,328 for the fall semester, a gain of 372 over the total for the previous year.
