To the editor:

I am writing to express my appreciation to Gary and Janice Toebben for their extraordinary contributions to the quality of life in Lawrence.

It is difficult to list all their community involvement and accomplishments. Janice has been active in many community organizations, including leadership positions with the United Way, the Lawrence Rotary Club and the Boys and Girls Club. Gary has held leadership positions with many organizations including the Friends of the Lied.

I have observed Gary in dozens of meetings over the past ten years. In every situation, he is courteous to all points of view, deliberate in consensus-building and determined, in a good-humored way, to bring issues to successful closure. He reminds me of an alert, steadfast border collie. He watches every move, knows everyone's position and works to herd everyone toward a common goal. Many of us have ended up in the same barn without ever realizing how we got there! We have Gary to thank for keeping many community projects on track.

Gary leaves the Lawrence Chamber in strong and capable hands. The recent appointment of Debi Moore as our new economic development director is proof of Gary's interest and skill in developing and trusting his staff.

It is difficult to lose Gary and Janice, but we owe them appreciation for the work that they have done in Lawrence. Their new community is fortunate to be the beneficiary of their talent and dedication.

Elaine Nelson,

Lawrence.
