Donations will help accident victims' families offset funeral costs.

Haskell Indian Nations University is raising money to help offset the funeral expenses for three students killed Sunday morning when the pickup truck they were riding in overturned in North Lawrence.

"Our students, faculty and staff have come forward and said they want to contribute. If the community at large wants to as well, that would be wonderful," said Freda Tapedo, a spokeswoman for Haskell.

Donations may be sent to Haskell Indian Nations University, c/o President's Office, P.O. Box 1305, Lawrence 66046.

Donations also may be taken to the President's Office in Navarre Hall on campus, 155 Indian Ave.

Donors wanting to direct their contributions to a specific family are asked to include or attach a note identifying the family.

"Whatever is raised will go for whatever the families need," Tapedo said. Some of the families, she said, are expected to need help paying traveling expenses.

Others, she said, will need help covering the costs of the funeral services.

Tapedo said she expects funeral arrangements for the three students to be confirmed by Thursday.

The students killed in the accident were Albert Whitebull, a Standing Rock Sioux from Kenel, S.D.; Yancy Longhat, a Caddo and Zuni from Zuni, N.M.; and Ray "Mike" Red Elk, a Kiowa and Comanche form Anadarko, Okla.
