A road repair and beach improvement at Lone Star Lake will cost Douglas County about $169,000 if county commissioners approve a contract for the work tonight.

Commissioners will consider the contract with Foley Construction of Lecompton during their meeting, which begins at 6:35 p.m. at the county courthouse, 11th and Mass.

At $169,000, the work will be a little more expensive than the $160,000 projected earlier this month by Keith Browning, county public works director.

Browning said the work would begin Sept. 13 and should be done within a few months if the contract is approved tonight.

Heavy rains in October damaged the blacktop road, causing it to break apart and slide toward the county lake.

As part of the repair, crews will rebuild the road and take the opportunity to build retaining walls to allow an expanded lakeside beach.

Work also is being planned for the lake's deteriorated spillway. That $1.9 million project will be paid for with funds from a special, countywide sales tax being applied to other county projects including the jail and new city-county health facility.

Browning said he hopes to break ground on the project this winter and have the work completed next summer.
