The Lawrence Police Department will continue to respond to calls at Haskell Indian Nations University, which is down to one campus security officer because of budget cuts.

Sgt. George Wheeler said Tuesday that Chief Ron Olin met Friday with Haskell officials to discuss security issues at the campus.

"We're going to respond (to any calls) just as we always have," Wheeler said.

Haskell plans to apply for a U.S. Department of Justice community policing grant, university officials said. Wheeler said Olin withheld comment about any LPD involvement in the grant because the application process is up to Haskell.

Haskell formerly had six security officers. Five officers have been reassigned to other areas of campus, leaving only supervisory security officer Don Cardinal.

Efforts to reach Haskell officials Tuesday for comment about the meeting with LPD were unsuccessful.
