The winners of the 1999 Phoenix Awards have something in common: Each of them is passionate about their life's work, and each has influenced others' lives.
From designing stained glass windows to working with students, from organizing book discussion groups to introducing opera to the masses, from inspiring young playwrights to creating bronze monuments, the winners have given hours of time and energy that have helped define Lawrence as a city of the arts.
The Phoenix Award winners will be honored at 2 p.m. today at the Lawrence Visitors Center-Union Pacific Depot in North Lawrence. The winners will receive a handmade book, depicting the story of the Phoenix, constructed by Lawrence artists Linda Samson-Talleur and Cathy Ledeker.
