Don't expect Lawrence city commissioners to be the ones to break with tradition and declare that Halloween will be observed on a day other than Oct. 31.
Commissioners next week will issue a proclamation designating Sunday, Oct. 31, as Halloween "Beggars Night," and calling on children to go trick-or-treating between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. that day.
The decision puts to rest rumors that the Lawrence observance of Halloween might be moved to Saturday, a non-school night, to better accommodate youngsters out and about.
To promote safety for trick-or-treaters, the city Utilities and Public Works departments have provided a supply of reflective McGruff Truck Halloween Safety Bags to local grade schools that children can use while on their rounds.
