Haskell Indian Nations University regents expect to hire a new president within the next six to 10 weeks.
"I'm hoping so, I'd really like to have it done by then," board president Mamie Rupnicki said on Wednesday.
The regents discussed the process for interviewing candidates in executive session.
The board expects to interview at least five candidates, including interim president Karen Swisher, Rupnicki said. She declined to identify the other candidates.
After the interviews, the regents will forward their selection to the federal Office of Indian Education Programs, Washington, for confirmation.
Candidates are expected to be American Indian, have a doctoral degree, dean-level leadership experience, and experience in strategic planning, teaching and research.
"We're looking for someone who knows the academic fields, who is able to administer in the proper way, who is a strong individual with good leadership and who can communicate with rest of the community," Rupnicki said.
Haskell President Bob Martin resigned July 1 to accept a teaching position at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
