I see that the new convenience store that's going in by the Mayflower Bus Co. on East 23rd has plastic plumbing drains and vents running through the walls and out the roof. I thought that PVC pipe was illegal to use in commercial projects above the slab in Lawrence and that cast iron materials had to be used. Has this building code been changed or is this some sort of special situation for this contractor?

Yes, the plumbing code has changed to allow plastic (PVC) pipe in restaurants and convenience stores.

Gene Shaughnessy, the city's chief building inspector, says this building is a pre-fab structure that was built with PVC plumbing material. The inspection staff is working with the owner to make necessary corrections to bring the plumbing material into compliance with the plumbing code.
