Reiner to visit

Iowa again

Jared Reiner, a 6-10, 240-pound senior center from Tripp Delmont High School in Tripp, S.D., says he make an official recruiting visit to Kansas for the Nebraska football weekend Oct. 29-30.

However, Iowa is the heavy favorite to land Reiner. In fact, Reiner, who has already made an official visit to Iowa is headed back to Iowa City this weekend for an unofficial visit. Reiner says he'll visit UConn next week for the Huskies' Midnight Madness and Utah on Oct. 22. He also is considering Illinois.

Seahawks split

Kansas City, Mo. -- Susie Warden had five kills as Lawrence Seabury defeated KC Dominion, 2-1, in junior high volleyball Wednesday. The Seahawks also bowed to KC St. Paul's 2-0.

Seabury ties, 1-1

Alex Sullivan scored on an assist by Jake Schneider as Seabury tied KC Barstow, 1-1, in freshman soccer on Wednesday at YSI.

KU netters ousted

Tempe, Ariz. -- Kansas' Rodrigo Echagaray went 1-1 and Ed Dus 0-1 at the Arizona State Invitational on Thursday. Echagaray beat Arizona State's Ed Carter 6-4, 6-2, then lost to Rice's Robert Collins, 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 (3). Dus fell to Rice's Prakash Venkataraman 6-1, 6-3 and also lost a consolation match to Utah's David Mercier 6-1, 6-4.

BU beats Peru State

Baldwin -- Baker University's volleyball team beat Peru State 16-14, 16-14, 15-2, on Thursday. Jessica Walters and Kathy Kern had 16 kills and Sarah Osterhaus 17 digs for BU.

Lions post second win

in boys soccer, 1-0

Leavenworth -- Lawrence High posted its first shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over Leavenworth Thursday.

Senior Clint Akerberg scored in the 20th minute on the free kick and senior goalie Billy Kelly recorded the save to boost the Lions' record to 2-8.

"Billy was the player of the game," LHS coach Chris Bertrand said. "He made at least eight outstanding saves and it was by far his best game in three years."

In the junior varsity contest, Lawrence's Jamie Peterson scored on a penalty kick and Derek Scott recorded the save. Scott stopped a penalty kick with six minutes left to preserve the shutout for the Lions (5-4-1).

Next for LHS is Olathe North at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Youth Sports Inc.

Firebird golfers fourth

Leawood -- Free State finished fourth among six teams in the Overland Park Aquinas girls golf invitational Thursday at Leawood South. Lauren Phlegar shot a 43 to earn third-place honors. Tess Lane shot a 45 for fifth place. Other Free State scores: Libby Towner 58, Ashley Johnson 60, Candace Bailey 67. Washburn Rural won the tournament with a 172 score. Free State totaled 206.
