Editors' note: The Mag is featuring a series of stories about events in the Lawrence area to welcome the year 2000. Please let us know about your event by calling Jan Biles, arts editor, 832-7146.

2000 is only three months away, so Linda Elwell and Lynn Akerberg are putting the final touches on the New Year's Eve celebration being planned at Abe and Jake's Landing, 8 E. Sixth.

Abe and Jake's will open for the New Year's Eve party, and then owners Mike and Linda Elwell are planning to launch the facility in the new year. So far, the 22,000-square-foot facility has been used for a few wedding receptions and a Lawrence Memorial Hospital fund-raiser.

The New Year's Eve party will feature hors d'oeuvres prepared by Liz Karr Catering Inc.; party favors; and a champagne toast at midnight.

Music will be provided by K.C. Brass & Electric, a Kansas City-based band that draws from rhythm and blues and vintage Memphis soul and blues but also plays a variety of musical styles.

"It's a fun band for 30- to 60-year-olds," Linda Elwell said.

K.C. Brass & Electric appears regularly at the Grand Emporium in Kansas City, Mo., and has opened for Roomful of Blues, Tommy Castro, Charlie Musselwhite and Duke Robillard. Members of the band are Fred Fendorf, guitar and vocals; Mike Croft, drums; Terry Pettet, bass; Neil Nolan, tenor sax; and David Duffield, cornet and flugelhorn.

The doors will open at 7:30 p.m., and cocktail attire is suggested, according to Akerberg and Elwell. Weather permitting, the deck, which overlooks the Kansas River, will be open.

Elwell said they are hoping for a crowd of 600 to 700 people.

Advance tickets are $50 a person, or you can buy them at the door for $60 a person. Tickets go on sale Monday at Abe and Jake's Landing or by calling 841-5855 between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Abe and Jake's Landing is housed in the restored Consolidated Barbed Wire factory on the Kansas River. When it opens next year, the facility will house Abe and Jake's Bar, an ice cream parlor, a grill, a coffee shop, a banquet hall and other shops.
