IN 1899

On Oct. 7, 1899, the Lawrence Journal stated: "There was too much on the minds of Kansas people today. They were listening all the time for the announcement of the arrival of the Twentieth, [at San Francisco from the Philippines] they were waiting anxiously for the outcome of the yacht race, and the war in the Transvaal had to be looked after. In addition to this, Lawrence had a football game, and that had to be attended to, and as it was Saturday and some business had to be done, we may regard this as having been our busy day."
