Eight Lawrence High pupils were named semifinalists in the fifth annual National Merit Scholarship program, a nationwide testing plan that provided grants for deserving students. The eight Lawrencians were Susan Whitley, David Storer, Judith Murphy, Felicia Oldfather, Lary Akin, Barbara Balfour, Charles Marvin and Bill Woodard.

The Lawrence High football team lost quarterback Jim Hill for the season because of an emergency appendectomy with complications. Mike Zwink was due to take over for Hill in a backfield that included the likes of fullback Jack Cranor and halfbacks Gary Mounkes and Tommy Black. Zwink was also a defensive back and he was expected to play both ways for the unbeaten Lions, who had a 32-game victory streak.
