Talbots, an international retailer of classic women's clothing and accessories, is sizing up Lawrence for a new store.
Betsy Thompson, manager of public relations for Hingham, Mass.-based Talbots Inc., said Friday there was "nothing confirmed" but acknowledged the company was checking out the city.
"We're always looking around in lots of areas, because we're a growing retailer," she said.
Talbots -- whose typical stores average about 3,700 square feet -- joins a growing list of national clothing retailers who are considering tapping into the Lawrence market.
Gap employees already have indicated their downtown store would relocate into new, larger space now under construction alongside its current downtown shop, while the vacated space likely would be occupied by Banana Republic. Eddie Bauer also is thought to be in the mix. Several national retailers already have opened stores.
Talbots has seven locations in Kansas, including four in Overland Park and one in Topeka. The company -- with plans for at least 40 new stores in 2000 -- has more than 660 stores in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. For the six months ended July 31, the company had sales of nearly $600 million.
