KU volleyball

to meet Huskers

Kansas will be hoping to put a dent in Nebraska's dominance when the Jayhawks entertain the Cornhuskers tonight in volleyball.

Game time is 7 p.m. at the Horesji Center.

Nebraska leads the all-time series, 62-1. KU's lone match win came in the first meeting between the two schools in 1975. Earlier this season, the Huskers won, 3-0, in Lincoln.

Nebraska (9-3 in the Big 12 and 17-5 overall) is ranked No. 13 nationally. Kansas is 6-6 in the league and 15-8 overall.

Lawrence's Murray

named all-league

Lawrence High senior Tom Murray, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound offensive lineman, was the lone Lion named to the all-Sunflower League football first team.

Lions selected to the second team were senior lineman Aaron Haack, senior linebacker Ryan Phelps and senior defensive back Clint Morgan.

Senior lineman Beau Wenger, senior running back/defensive back/punter Jason Fender, senior quarterback Bryce McMichael, senior wide receiver Blake Allen and junior linebacker Dustin Goodin received honorable mention.

BU soccer wins

first-round game

Baldwin -- Bryan Elkan scored one goal and assisted on another as Baker's men's soccer team defeated Culver Stockton, 3-1, in the first round of the Heart of America Athletic Conference tournament.

B.J. Blackwell scored Baker's first goal with an assist from Dave D'Ercole. Elkan scored the second goal off an assist by Peter Lenz. Elkan later assisted Jason Besey on Baker's final goal.

Baker (9-7-3) will play Lindenwood (12-6-1) in the second round Thursday in St. Louis.

West, Central

split in basketball

West defeated Central, 49-42, in a ninth grade girls basketball A game Tuesday.

The Warhawks (1-1) were led by Rychel Johnson with 15 points and Annika Zeisig with 14. Ramona Daney scored 19 for the Mustangs (0-2).

In the B game, Central dropped West to 0-2 with a 34-18 victory. Keisha Caldwell scored 12 for Central (1-1).

West plays next Thursday at Northern Hills.

Eighth graders split

West and Central split a pair of eighth grade games Tuesday at West. Amber Beierly scored 16 points to lead West to a 41-30 victory in the A game. Elizabeth Winter led Central with 14 points. In the B game, Kylee Tibbits scored nine points for Central in a 31-25 victory. Rebekah Berkley led West with 11 points.

SW stops Rural

Southwest defeated Topeka Washburn Rural, 37-35, in eighth grade girls basketball on Tuesday at SW. Cherrale Ricks scored 20 points with 12 rebounds. Southwest lost the B game, 26-17. Jillian Hill scored seven points for SW.

Baldwin wins two

Baldwin -- Baldwin defeated Eudora, 45-15, in eighth grade girls basketball on Tuesday. Kari Garrison had 15 points and Emily Brown 10 points for Baldwin (3-0). Baldwin's seventh grade won, 22-12. Hannah Mackie scored six points for Baldwin (3-0).

South stops Logan

South defeated Topeka Logan, 47-41, in ninth grade girls basketball on Tuesday at South. Caitlin Combest scored 12 points with 12 rebounds. Ashley Houk also had 12 for South (1-3). South lost the B game, 36-34. Alexis Hamilton scored 10 for South (2-2).
