Wichita Heidi Yost has a flair for the dramatic.
The Perry-Lecompton senior led throughout the triple jump competition on Saturday at the Class 4A state track and field meet until Hugton's Emilee Hamlin uncorked a 38-feet, 2-inch jump in the final round to take the lead, pressuring the two-time defending state champion.
"I'm like, 'Oh, no, now what I'm going to do?' " Yost said of her reaction to Hamlin's mark.
Yost, down to her final attempt, countered with a 39-1 jump to secure the victory and her third consecutive gold medal in the event. That winning mark also tied a 4A state meet record set by Yost last year.
"My adrenalin got me going," said Yost, motivated by Hamlin's jump. "I almost waited too long."
Before her eventual winning distance, Yost's best jump was 37-7 on her second attempt in preliminaries. She knew her final jump was good enough for gold.
"They have a cone out there to show where the record is and I was closer to the cone than she (Hamlin) was," Yost said.
With her third gold in the triple jump, Yost pulled a three-peat repeat. On Saturday, she also won the long jump for a third time.
"It's a good feeling," Yost said of snaring six golds in the two jumps for her prep career. "I guess that's what I came here to do in my senior year."
Yost, a Wichita State signee, felt more pressure this year than her previous times at state.
"My regionals weren't as good in the past and I wasn't ahead as much (with my distances)," Yost said. "I had a little more pressure on me this year, plus it was my senior year."
Later in the meet, Yost finished third in the 100 (13.12) and fifth in the 200 (27.13).
For her prep career, Yost finished with a total of nine state medals -- three firsts in triple jump, three firsts in long jump, a second in the triple jump, a third in the 100, and fifth in the 200.
Yost accounted for all 28 of the Kaws' team points.
