IN 1899

On May 30, 1899, the Lawrence World wrote of the flowers in profusion on Decoration Day noting the "recent wave of patriotic revival that has swept the country." The article noted that: "At Mount Oread (Pioneer) cemetery the soldiers' graves received special attention. There are two hundred veterans whose names are unknown resting in the old cemetery...A monument to the unknown dead has recently been erected in that cemetery."
