The former director of the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps has assumed the No. 2 academic administration position at Kansas University Medical Center, KUMC officials said Wednesday.

Edward Phillips, 52, replaced the retiring Roger Lambson as the medical center's vice chancellor for administration. Phillips' annual salary will be $131,000.

"I look forward to the opportunity to make a contribution to KU Medical Center's vital missions of education, research, patient care and service to the people of Kansas and the area," he said.

Phillips has 31 years of experience with health care systems in the Navy. He has a master's degree in hospital and health care administration from University of Iowa.

Donald Hagen, KUMC's executive vice chancellor, said he hired Phillips because of his ability to work with complex organizations.

"Probably no challenge is greater in the Navy than working in the budget process for the Defense Department," said Hagen, who worked with Phillips in the Navy.
