If you want to make sure you have a campsite at the lake for Memorial Day, get on the Internet.

The National Recreation Reservation Service, which makes reservations for Army Corps of Engineers campsites in the region, has gone online at

"It seems pretty user friendly," said Jim Franz, a park ranger with the corps at Clinton Lake.

The corps campsites started using National Recreation Reservation Service to take phone reservations this spring. Prior to that, the campgrounds at Clinton Lake had only taken reservations for group shelters and campgrounds. Now individual spots can be reserved, so families can guarantee their camping spots for a weekend even if they get off to a late start.

There isn't even a price for the convenience.

"There's no fee to make a reservation," Franz said. "There are service fees if you start changing your reservation."

People who want to make sure they have a spot for Memorial Day are in luck.

"We have one campground that is probably 90 percent full, and two others that are 25 percent," Franz said.

The phone reservations, at 1-877-444-6777, and the online reservations cover 1,700 federal campgrounds across the country. Individual campsites can be reserved up to 240 days in advance; group sites can be reserved up to 360 days in advance.
