When is lap swimming available this summer at the municipal pool?

The pool -- its formal name is the Lawrence Aquatic Center, 727 Ky. -- opens May 29, and the availability of lap swimming depends on when the pool is open for public swimming.

Where there's one, there's always the other.

"Lap swimming is always available," said Ernie Shaw, the city's parks and recreation superintendent for facilities and maintenance. "We always keep the center lanes up whenever it's open to the public."

Here is the center's schedule for its first week of the season:

  • May 29, 30 and 31: Open 1:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. for public swimming.
  • June 1-4: Open 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for public swimming.
  • June 5 and 6: Open 1:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. for public swimming.

After that, the center will be open for public swimming as usual: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, although some areas will be restricted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accommodate swim classes.

Weekends are from 1:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

"We always have at least four lanes for lap swimming, at all times," Shaw said.
