new building code
Douglas County commissioners will consider on Monday approving a commercial building code for unincorporated portions of the county.
The proposal is to adopt the Uniform Building, Uniform Mechanical, National Electric and Uniform Plumbing codes -- the same codes already enforced in Lawrence, Eudora, Baldwin and Lecompton.
The commissioners decided at their meeting Wednesday that they were in favor of a commercial building code to go with the residential building code already in place.
In a related matter, commissioners are considering a change in the fee structure for building permits. The county currently charges $250 for a building permit on a $100,000 property. A proposal to be discussed Monday would raise that amount to $480. In Lawrence, a similar permit would cost $600.
The commission will meet at 9 a.m. at the county courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts.
