Collins takes fourth

for Lion netters

Topeka -- Lawrence High tennis player Matt Collins went 2-2 in No. 2 singles to place fourth Wednesday to headline the Lion entries at the Topeka Invitational.

Lawrence's Mike Connolly placed fifth in No. 1 singles and Lawrence's Lyman Fox was fifth in No. 3 singles.

"I was really pleased with the strength we showed in singles," LHS coach Dick Wedel said. "Mike had spots where he played very well both aggressively and consistently. Then there were other spots where he lost one of those positivites.

"Matt Collins continued to play well. He used his head in every match."

The Lions will play Friday at Leavenworth.

Free State rocks

SM West in dual

Free State High's boys tennis team won five singles matches and all three doubles matches Wednesday for an 8-1 dual victory over Shawnee Mission West at FSHS.

Erick Axcell, Matt Axcell, Sam Borge, Casey Green and Ben Jensen won in singles. Matt Axcell-Borge, Scott Johnson-Adam Wyss and Austin Paley-Matt Pepple teamed to win in doubles.

Free State, LHS

top coaches' poll

Free State High and Lawrence High are ranked Nos. 1 and 2 respectively in this week's Class 6A baseball coaches' poll.

It marks the first time both Lawrence high schools have ranked 1-2 at the same time in any poll.

Free State is 9-2 and LHS is 10-2.

The Firebirds will play host to the Lions at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

DeSoto claims

Louisburg tourney

Louisburg -- DeSoto High's Scott Kramer nabbed the individual title with a 78 round and the Wildcats won the team title Wednesday at the Louisburg golf tournament.

DHS, which finished with a 322 total, has won six of seven tournaments this season.

Other medalists for DeSoto were Seth Rhodes, third; Nick Meyer, fifth; Jimmy Nolan, seventh; and Brandon Power, ninth.

Baldwin, led by Kurt Everett's fourth-place finish, was a distant second with 346 strokes.

Oskaloosa splits

with Maur Hill

Oskaloosa -- Cyle Kitchen struck out seven batters and went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to spark Oskaloosa to a 15-5 high school baseball victory over Maur Hill on Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader. Maur Hill salvaged a split, winning the nightcap, 7-3.

Kitchen homered and doubled in the first game. He was 6-for-8 with three doubles and six RBIs in the twinbill. Oskaloosa's David Tufte went 3-for-4 with a home run in the first game.

Kyle Rockhold was 4-for-7 with a double and three RBIs in the two games.

Next for the Bears is a home doubleheader Friday against Burlingame.

Free State soccer falls

Free State High school dropped a C-team girls soccer game, 4-0, to Shawnee Mission South on Wednesday at Free State. The Firebirds (1-7) will play Wednesday against Lawrence High at YSI.

Free State JV falls

Olathe -- Olathe South defeated Free State, 9-6 and 17-6, in high school junior varsity baseball doubleheader on Wednesday night.

Justin Carlsten, Jake Neu and Clint Thrasher each had three hits, and Brad Pohl had two hits for Free State (3-7). One of Neu's hits was a double.
