Free State tennis

wins first tourney

DeSoto -- Free State High's boys tennis team finished first at the eight-team Gardner-Edgerton Invitational on Saturday, the first tournament win in team history.

The Firebirds' No. 1 doubles team of Matt Axcell and Sam Borge went 3-0 to take first place, and Erick Axcell finished second in No. 1 singles by going 2-1.

"This was a big day for our tennis program," FSHS coach Jon Renberger said. "The Axcells and Borge are high-caliber players and people are starting to notice and respect their aggressively successful style of play. The team is certainly benefiting by their example."

Baldwin junior Blake Glover continues to cruise. Blake went 3-0 to claim No. 1 singles. He lost just five games in five sets.

LHS sophomore split

Overland Park -- Lawrence High's sophomore baseball team split a doubleheader with SM West Saturday, losing the first game, 3-1, then winning, 10-5, at 3&2 fields.

Chris Johnson went 6-for-9 for the day with three doubles. Joe Bell was 5-for-8 with four doubles.

Derek Bailey went 2-for-4 in the second game. Eric Peterson was the winning pitcher. Mike Morrell picked up the save. The Lions, 7-2, will meet Olathe North at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at YSI.

Haskell softball

wins Region Six

Haskell's women's softball team won the NJCAA Region Six Tournament played Saturday at Hobbs.

Haskell defeated Central of McPherson, 6-3, and Hesston, 15-5, and advances to an NJCAA regional competition in either Michigan or Ohio on May 14-15.

Olivia Pewamo went 4-for-4 with four runs scored in the two games. Rayanne Harden had five hits and Bobi Jim three. Shauna Hurst was the winning pitcher in both games for Haskell, 10-5 overall.

Free State sophs

sweep Lancers

Free State's sophomore baseball team improved to 8-4 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Shawnee Mission East on Saturday at FSHS, 8-7 and 10-6.

Cassidy Thompson paced the Firebirds offensively, finishing the day 4-for-8 with seven RBIs and a home run. Aaron Hicks added two hits and four RBIs, and reliever Jake Coffman collected a pair of saves.

Paul Holladay went 2-for-3 in the opener, and delivered the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Firebirds will play at Olathe East on Wednesday.

FSHS JV tennis

second in Emporia

Emporia -- Free State High's junior varsity boys tennis team finished second out of eight teams at Friday's Emporia Invitational.

The No. 1 doubles team of David Bireta and Ben Bullington and No. 2 doubles team of Brady Flannery and Pat Krivoshia both earned first-place finishes.

Wendland places first

Topeka -- Rob Wendland of Lawrence took home Winston top qualifier money and the No. 1 qualifying spot in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the All Pro Auto Parts Heartland Championships at Heartland Park. Wendland's pass of 5.594 seconds at 252.23 mph is nearly a tenth of a second faster than No. 2 qualifier Mark Kinser
