Looks like part of Iowa Street will get a new face, after all.
Tuesday night, Lawrence city commissioners are scheduled to receive a report from city officials outlining plans for using a state grant to help resurface a major street in town.
Commissioners originally had planned this summer to use $300,000 -- most of it furnished by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) -- to repave Sixth Street, from Vermont to Missouri streets.
But a suggestion to restripe the fresh pavement to provide a center turn lane in the area, which runs along the northern edge of the historic Old West Lawrence neighborhood, drew fire from some people, and commissioners started looking for options.
Using the money on Iowa Street instead is OK with KDOT, but now the project likely will be pushed back until September or October, officials said.
The delay also will mean the project will have to be completed during the daytime -- when traffic is heaviest -- because of falling temperatures, officials said.
