Pratt An unprecedented 10-day antlerless-only deer season has been approved by the Wildlife and Parks Commission.
During the special season that will run from Dec. 31 until Jan. 9, 2000, all unfilled permits will revert to whitetail antlerless-only permits.
While all legal firearm, archery and muzzleloader equipment may be used during the special season, all hunters will be required to wear blaze orange.
"In response to rising deer-vehicle accidents and crop damage complaints, as well as our data on population densities, we believe an extended second season is needed to control deer numbers," says KDWP Secretary Steve Williams.
Although actual permit numbers will not be set until Wildlife and Parks Commission Meeting on April 27 in Hays, it is anticipated that authorized permits, including antlerless-only game tags, will again be increased.
The application period for resident firearm and muzzleloader hunters will be from the earliest date applications are available through July 15, 1999.
Residents may purchase two antlerless-only game tags for use in specified units, a unit archery permit, and as many as two leftover permits, in addition to one primary permit.
