— The school district is renovating the high school track and the bleachers and otherwise upgrading the track and field facilities. But it is strong support from community volunteers that will make the final result grander than it otherwise might have been, said Supt. Richard Ericson.

"It's being done through a mixture of volunteer and bid work," he said. "There's a lot of expertise in this community."

An estimated $330,000 worth of the project's estimated cost is being borne by volunteers who are stepping forward with free or discounted labor and materials, he said.

Larry Meadows Construction has the contract for the new eight-lane track. But the company, like others involved in the project, has poured in far more effort than the contract requires, Ericson said.

When the project is complete there will be new stands for about 1,000 spectators, new lighting, a new scoreboard, pressbox and fencing, Ericson said. About a third of the whole project results from volunteerism.

"That's just phenomenal," Ericson said.
