A man shot himself in the head after being pulled over by police outside the Journal-World early this morning, police said.

His condition was not immediately known.

The unidentified man, driving a Ford Tempo, pulled into the parking lot outside the Journal-World, 609 N.H., after being pulled over by a police officer about 12:40 a.m., Sgt. Kirk Fultz said.

A hitchhiker in the passenger seat of the man's car soon got out and walked back toward the officer, Fultz said.

"The guy (driver) all of a sudden had a gun to his head and pulled the trigger," Fultz said.

Fultz said he did not know why the car was stopped.

Several police cars soon were on the scene, and ambulance officials were tending to the driver, who was slumped over the steering wheel. A small pistol -- one officer called it a 9mm -- was sitting on the trunk as officers tried to sort out what happened.
