Topeka A Lawrence man was sentenced Friday for liquor store robberies.
Andre D. Newman, 20, was sentenced to nine years, three months in federal prison without parole and ordered to pay $852 in restitution by a U.S. district judge.
Newman and co-defendant, Anthony T. Vann, each pleaded guilty in November to two counts of robbery, one count of carrying a firearm during a robbery and one count of conspiracy.
The robberies were both of Lawrence stores; Koleber Retail Liquor, 1805 W. Second, was robbed on Jan. 15, 1998, and Spirit Liquor, 600 Lawrence Ave., was robbed on Jan. 19, 1998.
Newman drove the getaway care in both robberies. U.S. Attorney Jackie Williams said that he also conspired with Vann, Chaz Green and Matthew W. Headley to rob another liquor store on Jan. 19, 1998.
Green, 18, Lawrence, pleaded guilty in June to using a gun in connection with the robbery of Koleber Retail Liquor and to robbing Spirit Liquor. He was sentenced Nov. 23, 1998, to five years in federal prison. Headley, 22, Lawrence, pleaded guilty in September to robbing the Taco Johns at 1101 W. Sixth on Jan. 7 and armed robbery of the Spirit Liquor store. He was sentenced Dec. 16 to nine year, three months in prison.
Willie D. Paul, 19, pleaded guilty in July to the robbery of Koleber Retail Liquor and was sentenced to four years, three months in prison. Vann is awaiting sentencing.
