— One last run by Olathe East was one too many for Lawrence High's girls to overcome Friday night in the Hawks' gym.

Ahead by four points with 3:47 left, O-East (12-9) closed with a 10-1 surge to seal a 58-45 Class 6A sub-state victory over LHS and end the Lions' season. The Hawks had earlier runs of 12-0 and 10-0 to build their lead.

"I don't know if we were tired but we missed some shots," said LHS coach David Platt, whose Lions finished 6-15. "We had some easy looks and Olathe East got a lot of second and third shots. We talked about boxing out, but I guess we weren't quite ready. It hurt us that Allison (Ramirez) got into foul trouble because she had a heck of a game."

LHS shot 35 percent from the field (17-for-48) while O-East shot 40 percent (18-for-44). The Hawks outscored the Lions 22-7 at the free-throw line.

"We knew they were a good free-throw shooting team," said LHS junior point guard Dani May, who scored a team-high 10 points. "They got the opportunities and knocked them down."

O-East's Katie Sears, a 6-foot senior, knocked down plenty of baskets. She scored a game-high 21 points on 10-for-16 shooting.

Defensively, O--East smothered Somer Easterwood, the Lions' leading scorer all season. Easterwood, who scored 21 points against the Hawks a month ago, was limited to eight points.

Olathe East will play Shawnee Mission Northwest, a 61-49 winner over Olathe North, at 6 tonight for a berth in next week's Class 6A state tournament in Emporia.
