A new pastor has been appointed to lead First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. The Rev. Virgil Brady, who in December announced his intention to retire, will give his last sermon in the post on June 6.

The Rev. Sharon Howell, currently serving as district superintendent of the Kansas City District of the United Methodist Church, will assume duties as the First United Methodist pastor in July. Howell, who has been district superintendent for the last five years, has served as pastor of the Edwardsville and St. Mark's United Methodist churches in the Kansas City area. She was also director of recruitment for St. Paul School of Theology, Kansas City, Mo.

The Staff Parish Relations Committee and the Leadership Team of First United Methodist unanimously approved the bishop's recommendation of Howell as pastor, a release from the church says.
