On March 5, 1899, the Lawrence World told of a victory on the road by the basketball team at KU in its first season. The defeated Topeka YMCA took the loss well, as the World noted "As a parting evidence of their good will Mr. Hulse, one of the players, presented the KU players with a box of beautiful cut flowers. The spirit of true sportsmanship that animates the Topeka players is highly commendable and worthy of emulation. The game was played in the YMCA Gymnasium and was well attended, a large proportion of the audience being ladies."
