Bill Nelson, associate director of the student organizations and leadership development center and coordinator for Greek programs at Kansas University, said several fraternities have made national pledges to go alcohol-free by 2000 and some local chapters also have made the commitment.

Fraternities that made the decision on a national level:

  • Sigma Nu, Delta Chi, Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Delta Theta.

Fraternities at KU that decided on a local chapter level:

  • Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Tau Kappa Epsilon.

Nelson stressed that the definition of "alcohol-free" differs from fraternity to fraternity.
