Lawrence police had not made contact as of Wednesday afternoon with the mother of three children left by themselves overnight Monday and all day Tuesday.
Sgt. Richard Nickell said the children still were with relatives. He said he didn't know if Social and Rehabilitation Services had been able to find the mother.
About 5 p.m. Tuesday, police went to a home in the 1400 block of East 21st, where a 3-year-old boy, a 4-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl had been left since Monday night. The 10-year-old, who did not go to school Tuesday and stayed with her siblings, called a family friend on Tuesday afternoon, and the friend called police, a police spokesman said.
Police took the children to the Douglas County Judicial & Law Enforcement Center, where the children were fed. A relative then took custody of them.
The children's father is not living in the home, police said.
