David Mucci replaces James Long, who was director of the Kansas and Burge unions for 16 years.

The director of the University of Idaho's student union was named Monday to the top job in the Kansas and Burge unions at Kansas University.

David Mucci will begin work as director of KU's student union facilities Aug. 1. KU unions provide food service, entertainment and supplies to more than 30,000 students and faculty and staff members.

"I am excited about coming to Kansas and grateful for the opportunity," he said.

Mucci has directed the Student Union and Idaho Commons in Moscow, Idaho, since 1993. He directed activities of 200 employees and a $2.3 million budget.

He previously was union director at Ohio State University and a senior program adviser at Texas A&M. He began his career in student union management at the University of Kentucky, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees.

Mucci replaced James Long, who was director of the Kansas and Burge unions for 16 years. In January, Long was named assistant provost for facilities planning and management at KU.

David Ambler, KU vice chancellor for student affairs, said Mucci was among the outstanding leaders in the student union field.

He promised Mucci would provide "dynamic and creative leadership."
