— Paola matched the Lawrence Outlaws every inning on Tuesday until the 10th, when Skip Skahan doubled home the go-ahead run and scored an insurance run on a error.

Paola hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 10th, but Lawrence escaped with an 8-7 American Legion baseball victory.

"They answered us every time, but we had the last answer," Outlaws coach Carl Brooks said.

Lawrence (12-8) scored twice in the first, three times in the sixth and once in the ninth. Paola scored the same amount of runs in all three of those innings.

In the seventh, John Swenson led off with a single and scored on Skahan's double. Skahan later scored on a throwing error.

Lawrence bashed 20 hits, including 19 singles. Swenson and Aaron Rose both had four hits. Jesse James and Damon Benitez had three hits apiece. Jim Hahn, Skahan and Blake Allen produced two hits apiece.

Lawrence's Bruce Dixon pitched all 10 innings for the win.

Next for the Outlaws is the Al Ice tournament Thursday through Friday in Lawrence. The Outlaws will open with Shawnee Mission at noon at Free State.
