June 23, 1999

On June 23, 1899, the Lawrence Journal told of the brief stop in the city made by Teddy Roosevelt, then governor of New York, at the Santa Fe depot with about 2,000 people on hand. On his way to a reunion with his Rough Riders with his train stopping only long enough to take on water. Roosevelt's remarks were understandably short. Among his comments reported in the Journal was: "I know that Lawrence is one of those historic towns founded under the same spirit that has pervaded the nation during the recent war with Spain."
