Powell Gardens set

holiday weekend

The annual Daylily Daze festival at Powell Gardens, southeast of Kansas City, Mo., will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 3 and noon to 5 p.m. July 4. The Missouri Symphony Pops will perform at 7 p.m. July 3 and will play selections by Gershwin, Sondheim, Bernstein and other crowd-pleasing favorites. The Pops concert will be followed by a professional fireworks display at 9 p.m.

Festivities include viewing more than 350 varieties daylilies in bloom -- with many varieties on sale -- live jazz and daylily lectures.

The weekend will kick off a special topiary exhibit. The 11 topiaries depict the stages of the metamorphosis process of the regal fritillary, a rare butterfly in Missouri.

Paola slates garden tour

The Paola Tourism Group will present the Paola Garden Tapestry Tour and Tea from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and next Sunday. Eight of Paola's most spectacular gardens will be featured. Gardens of several Victorian homes are on the tour, which also will feature the gardens of the Ursuline Convent, a kitchen garden and gardens around a train depot that has been converted into a home. Water gardeners offer tour

Consider it a full day of "pondering."

The 1999 Water Garden Tour, sponsored by the Sunflower Water Garden Society, will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 17. The 16 ponds on the tour cover the full range of styles and uses. All locations will have experienced pond keepers to answer questions and share the pleasures of water gardening.

Tickets and a map are on sale at most garden centers in the Lawrence area and cost $10 per person.
