Preserving downtown's unique character and historic feel in the face of continued redevelopment projects will be the responsibility of a new advisory board to be formed Wednesday afternoon.
Commissioners are expected to approve a resolution that would establish the city's Downtown Design Guidelines Task Force. Its membership would include 16 representatives as follows:
- One city commissioner.
- Two from each of the following blocks of Massachusetts Street: 600, 700, 800, 900 and 1000. Representation would be split evenly between property owners and business owners.
- One from the 1100 block of Massachusetts.
- One property owner and one business owner from New Hampshire Street.
- One property owner and one business owner from Vermont Street.
Specific members would be appointed in the coming weeks by Mayor Erv Hodges, with consent of fellow commissioners. Dennis Enslinger, the city's historic resources administrator, would provide technical assistance for the task force.
