A former Baldwin and Wellsville police officer was arrested this week on charges of taking aggravated indecent liberties against an 8-year-old girl.

Michael Eugene Cassity, 41, of Lawrence, allegedly made the girl touch his penis on several occasions between November 1998 and March 13, according to Franklin County officials.

The complaint, which was filed Wednesday, charges Cassity in the most recent alleged incident on March 13. He was released Thursday on $10,000 bond.

Cassity was living in Franklin County at the time of the alleged incident, though he had since moved to Lawrence, officials said. The Franklin County sheriff's department investigated the case after a school official reported an alleged case of child abuse March 17. A sheriff's officer arrested him just before 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ottawa's Wal-Mart Distribution Center, his current place of employment.

Cassity had been an officer for the Baldwin Police Department until he resigned in October 1993, according to court records from a 1992 divorce. Wellsville Police Chief Randy Hinderliter said Cassity had been a Wellsville officer in the early to mid 1980s.

If convicted, Cassity could be required to serve between 46 and 206 months in prison, officials said.
