Personnel changes continue for Lawrence public schools as Director of Human Resources Marcia Bone resigns.

The Lawrence school district is about to lose a second administrator.

Director of Human Resources Marcia Bone on Monday announced her resignation, effective July 1.

Bone's announcement came on the day Assistant Supt. Craig Fiegel attended his last board meeting and the hiring of Fiegel's replacement, James R. Freeman, was announced by the district.

"I have resigned to pursue other interests that will allow me to spend more time with my children, ages 9 and 11," Bone said. "I appreciate the opportunities provided to me in Lawrence and have especially enjoyed working with the new superintendent. I have learned a great deal that will be of value to me in my future endeavors."

Bone was hired by the district in 1996 to oversee the personnel department, which employs 920 certified staff members and 730 classified staff members.

Though Bone's resignation is effective July 1, she has agreed to assist the district during the transition.

"Dr. Bone is a skillful, gifted and talented educational professional," Supt. Kathleen Williams said in a prepared statement. "It has been my privilege to have been associated with someone so dedicated in giving of her time."

Williams is in Eutin, Germany, as part of a sister city exchange program and did not attend Monday's board meeting.

Fiegel received accolades from board members, who noted his accomplishments in the district.

"Your work received the most criticism but, professionally, the most praise," said board President Maley Wilkins. "In looking at the curriculum audit report only one area received a pat on the back, and that was Craig's area. That hasn't gone unnoticed."

Board member Mary Loveland said that Fiegel moved the district from "Band-Aid fixes" to classrooms where everyone works and learns in climate-controlled comfort.

"I always want him on my side in a fight," she said.

Fiegel next month will take over as the superintendent of the Evergreen Park school district in Evergreen, Ill.

Freeman, who will replace Fiegel, has a new title to go along with his new job.

He will be the executive director of business for the district.

Freeman is the present business manager for Buhler public schools. He has held the position since 1994. Prior to serving in his current role, he was the district's technology coordinator for two years. From 1975-1992 he taught instrumental music in the Buhler and Wichita public schools.

"I am certainly looking forward to working for the children of Lawrence and am especially pleased to be working with such an outstanding staff," Freeman said.

Freeman will be responsible for supervising business services, including budgeting and facilities operations, and will serve as a member of the superintendent's Cabinet.

He will begin working for the Lawrence district some time after July 1.

Freeman's wife, DeeAnn, is an elementary music teacher and teaches piano lessons. They have two sons, David, a Kansas University aerospace engineering student, and Daniel, a Buhler High School senior.
