Is it legal for a car to drive down the road with its flashers on, escorting two bicycles? This happened on Highway 32 where the speed limit is 65. They were traveling about 15 to 20 miles an hour creating a safety hazard.
It's a tricky call whether the motorists were doing the right thing or not, said Sgt. John Eichkorn of the Kansas Highway Patrol.
He noted that under state law, no one is supposed to drive "at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable mode of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or compliance with law."
The motorists probably thought they were doing the right thing by helping the cyclists, Eichkorn said. But he said the KHP likely would caution against escorts at those speeds because they could cause traffic problems instead of prevent them.
