EL DORADO Lawrence's Raiders opened the American Legion baseball season by winning the eight-team Taylor Classic.
The Raiders, who run-ruled Frontenac, Wichita and Winfield to start the tournament, handcuffed host El Dorado, 4-1, in Sunday's finals.
"We had a goal when we went down there to win it," Raiders coach Lee Ice said. "Once we started advancing and got to the championship game, our goal was to not come home second. The kids played extremely well. I thought it was good for us to face the home team in the championship game."
Brandon Johnson was the winning pitcher. He struck out four and walked none while scattering seven hits.
The Raiders jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Matt Maigaard walked and moved to second on a ground out by Cooper Chapin. Dustin Myers walked. Nick Wilcox followed with an RBI single.
The Raiders scored three in the fourth. Riley Scott was hit by a pitch. Cory Smith put down a bunt single. The runners moved up on a wild pitch. Matt Heider then grounded out, scoring Scott. Maigaard rapped a two-out single to score Smith. He stole second and scored on a hit by Chapin.
Maigaard went 2-for-3 overall with an RBI.
"We had timely hitting in the three-run inning," Ice said. "Brandon pitched well. The hits they had were not bunched together. The only run he gave up was a 2-1 fastball a guy hit out."
Ice is hoping the Raiders win a batch of tournaments this season.
"With the club we have, it'll be the goal in every one of them. We have 14 final-year players," Ice said.
The Raiders will travel to Paola Tuesday night without six players who will compete in the Metro Coaches All-Star games at 5 and 7:30 p.m. at KU's Hoglund Ballpark.
The Raiders will meet the KC Seminoles in a twinbill at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Free State's field.
"It was good to win the tournament. The competition will get tougher as we go on," Ice said.
