Former Lawrence High basketball and football assistant David Petry is returning to his alma mater to be the Lions' head baseball coach.

Petry spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the Free State football and boys basketball programs.

"I think it's a good opportunity to come back," said Petry, a 1985 LHS graduate.

Petry's baseball coaching experience includes one year with a 13-year-old team, two years with a 14-15 year-old team and a year with a 16-year-old American Legion team eight years ago.

"I haven't been coaching at the high school level," said Petry, who played one year of baseball at Butler County before coming to Kansas University, where he graduated.

Petry, who will teach math, hopes to assist with the LHS football and basketball programs.

"We're trying to get something worked out," he said.

Petry becomes the third head coach in the Lions' 15-year history of baseball. Lynn Harrod coached the program the first 11 years and Dirk Wedd the past three before resigning last month after being named LHS head football coach.
