Cottonwood Inc., raised $13,000 more than organizers expected at a wine tasting Friday night.

"There are such generous, generous people in this community," said Kesha Larson, the director of community relations at Cottonwood Inc.

"Salute -- A Festival of Wine & Food" offered patrons wines from around the world and food from top area restaurants and caterers at the Ludington-Thacher house, 1613 Tenn. The event was sponsored by Standard Beverage Corp., which provided more than 150 wines to sample. Area caterers and restaurants fed the visitors, while Cork & Barrel and other businesses donated items for the silent and live auctions.

More than 400 people attended the event.

The event raised a total of $38,000, much more than the $25,000 organizers expected. It topped Cottonwood's annual Kansas Open Golf Tournament, which generally raises around $30,000.

Standard Beverage sponsors other wine tastings for various charities around Kansas, but "Salute" was the first it has sponsored in Lawrence. Larson and Beverly Moore, Standard Beverage's festival director, hope to make it an annual affair.

"We're going to try to go for 1,000 tickets next year," Moore said.

Cottonwood Inc., is a not-for-profit organization that provides services for children and adults who are mentally retarded or developmentally disabled.
