New incidences of Dutch elm disease were found in trees four miles east of Lawrence and if normal spreads occurred, the malady could overrun the city in a year, officials said. Dutch elm was usually fatal for trees and Lawrence eventually was to lose up to a third of its mature elms.

Once again, the women students at Kansas University had whipped the men in grade point averages for the past semester. The female victory was traditional.
