Fire caused about $95,000 in damage at the Holiday Inn Restaurant at 2309 Iowa. It apparently started in an air-conditioner and spread so rapidly that extinguishing it was impossible. There were no injuries. The restaurant was to be out of operation for several weeks, officials said.

The city was reeling from a 103-degree temperature the day before and even more searing weather was in the forecast.

Phased expansion of the Lawrence airport, including a $168,000 expenditure later in the year, was proposed in a consultant's report to the city commission. The Airport Advisory Board had endorsed the plan with an eye to a $670,000 renovation project.

Fire accomplished what Kansas Atty. Gen. Vern Miller had been unable to do during the local turbulence of 1970 -- close the infamous Gaslight Tavern, 1941 Oread, where Miller felt a number of troublesome events had been hatched. The cause of the early morning fire had yet to be determined.
