Buying a box of back-to-school crayons might not seem a big deal to many Lawrence families, but it can be for those who are financially strapped.
To help out, the East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation (ECKAN) is seeking donations for its "Equip our Children for School Success" program.
The annual program provides school supplies, including a backpack, for low-income grade school students in Douglas County.
ECKAN helps more than 200 children each year through the program. Last year the program provided school supplies to 217 children, director Eve Cofer said.
People who would like to donate cash or adopt a child may contact ECKAN at (785) 841-3357. It costs about $35 to outfit a child with school supplies, depending on the grade, Cofer said.
One way people can help is to buy two of everything when buying for their own children, she said. ECKAN will accept new, unopened supplies at its office, 1600 Haskell, No. 197.
The organization asks that those who plan to donate notify ECKAN as soon as possible. Contributions should be made by Aug. 7.
