The new personnel director for Lawrence schools, Mary Rodriguez, is a veteran teacher and administrator.

An assistant high school principal with more than 20 years of experience in Lawrence public schools was promoted Friday to director of human resources for the district.

Mary Rodriguez, 45, begins work Tuesday as the replacement for Marcia Bone, who was among two high-level administrators to resign district posts this summer.

Rodriguez had been assistant principal at Lawrence High School for the past four years. She taught business courses at Lawrence High from 1978 to 1995. In her new job, she will oversee employment of 920 certified staff members and 730 classified employees.

Supt. Kathleen Williams said Rodriguez had a strong commitment to the district and a firm understanding of district issues. She also has the right personality for the job, Williams said.

"With her integrity, warm demeanor and positive outlook, she will represent this district well," Williams said.

LHS principal Dick Patterson endorsed the promotion of Rodriguez to the top human resources slot.

"Mary is an efficient, well-organized, fair and compassionate individual," he said.

In addition to including student management responsibilities at LHS, Rodriguez's role as an assistant principal included oversight of curriculum and instruction leadership and accreditation. She supervised education paraprofessionals and secretaries and worked with the faculty advisory council.

Rodriguez earned a bachelor's degree in business education at the University of Nebraska. Her master's degree in educational administration is from Kansas University.

She didn't return calls Friday to her home and office.

Bone, who led the district's personnel department since 1996, resigned to "pursue other interests that will allow me to spend more time with my children." She resigned effective July 1, but agreed to stay on until her replacement was hired.

Craig Fiegel, an assistant superintendent, resigned to become a school superintendent in Evergreen, Ill. James Freeman of Buhler was hired to replace him. Freeman had been business manager for Buhler public schools since 1994.
