Lawrence police arrested a 44-year-old Lawrence woman early Monday after she allegedly shot her neighbors' unoccupied home with a handgun Sunday night.
Rosemary Rae Miller was booked into the Douglas County Jail at 12:49 a.m. Monday for criminal discharge of a firearm and criminal damage.
Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said police were called to the 2000 block of Massachusetts Street about 11:30 p.m. Sunday after a family returned home from seeing the downtown fireworks show and noticed bullet holes in their home.
"After collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses, the officers determined that it was a neighbor who fired the weapon, and she was arrested," Hadl said.
A woman who lives in the home said her family knew something was wrong when they noticed sheet rock on the floor inside the house.
The home appeared to have been shot seven times, police said.
The woman said she had no idea why her neighbor would shoot at her home.
"I've only spoken to her once and that was when we first moved in," said the woman, who asked not to be identified.
She and her husband live in the home with three children, ages 8, 4 and 3, she said. They have lived there a year, she said.
"It's been a good neighborhood," the woman said. However, she added, "We are thinking about moving."
Hadl said the shooting occurred between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Miller was being held without bond on Monday night.
